Hope in the Shadows: A therapy group for those facing sexual addiction

If you suspect that your sexual behaviors are becoming compulsive and out of control, a good support team is essential in moving forward towards sexual health and relational recovery.

Hope in the Shadows groups are private and confidential small groups (4-7 members) that meet on a weekly basis. They are therapist led and utilize the Carnes' Model of treating sexual addiction. Ideally, these groups are designed to work in conjunction with one-on-one therapy and existing 12-Step recovery programs in the local area. These groups use the Facing the Shadows materials developed by Patrick Carnes, PhD, an internationally recognized expert on the issue of Sexual Addiction.

Some of the tasks that this group focuses on include:

  • Recognizing Self-Delusion
  • Understanding Addictive Behavior
  • Understanding Compulsive Sexuality
  • Accepting the Problem
  • Responding to Change and Crisis
  • Managing Life without Dysfunctional Sexual Behavior
  • Managing the Physical
  • Creating Support Systems
  • Deepening Recovery
  • Profound Life Change

Betty Ford Center Five Star Kids Program

The Betty Ford Center Five Star Kids program is specifically designed for children between the ages of 7 and 12 who have been affected by a loved ones addiction to drugs or alcohol. Groups are held in Irving, Richardson and Ft. Worth at various dates throughout the year. The groups run for five hours on a Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and school excuses are provided for those groups held within the school year. Through the use of games, videos, activities, skits and expressive arts children learn that their familys problems are not their fault and healthy ways to cope. On Saturday, a supportive caregiver attends with the child to learn and encourage future communication in healthy ways. Ongoing support is available after the program for both adults and children, and scholarships are available for any family in need.

To register, please contact our Site Coordinator, Lance Hughes, at LHughes@bettyfordinstitute.org or call (972)751-0363.

To learn more, please see our website and click on the Texas location for more details.

D/FW Self-injury Support and Therapy Groups

The goals of the groups are emotional support, education, and intervention. It is a place where injurers can share what coping skills have been helpful to them in addition to learning new skills from a licensed therapist who has extensive experience working with those who have a history of self-harm. The groups are interactive and discussions about the underlying issues that contribute to self-injury are addressed. The groups are designed to be non-judgmental and a safe place to talk about this behavior. Interested participants MUST REGISTER for the groups by contacting Lori Vann, M.A., LPC-Supervisor either through e-mail or calling her. These are NOT OPEN GROUPS.
